Into the Deep End

Alice

I love playing in the pool but I was always very afraid of deep water. If I couldn’t touch the floor, it would scare me.

To get past this, my mum helped me to regulate my emotions. She helps me do this whenever I get afraid, angry or sad. When I did it to get past my fear of deep water, it helped me so much.

One day, I was at the pool with my brother and I really wanted to go to the place in the water where I couldn’t touch the bottom of the pool. Nervously, I went to the edge of the pool where it was deepest at 2 metres. I closed my eyes, put my hands where I felt something was happening in my body, then I followed the sensations that were happening until it all calmed down. When I opened my eyes again, I looked down at the deep water and I wasn’t scared anymore!

I jumped right in. I’ve never been afraid of deep water again.

I’m now training to dive headfirst and without plugging my nose. I managed to go from being scared of deep water to now loving every opportunity to jump in!
